Esquimalt was named by its first inhabitants, the Songhees. The name means "a place of gradual shoaling". Today, 17,000 residents live here and it is the western location of the Canadian Forces Naval Base and shipbuilding industry. Esquimalt is almost completely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
