Well, it's that time of year again. Family's order pizza (or in our house: homemade) and sit around and wonder at the glitz and spectacle of the Academy Awards. It is the year's cultural Super Bowl.
The Oscars first occured on May 26th, 1829 at the Hollywood Rosevelt Hotel to an audience of 270 people. My, things have changed since then. Consider:
The Oscar is made of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base. It is 13 1/2 inches tall and weighs 13 1/2 pounds.
It depicts a knight rendered in Art Deco style holding a crusader's sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes, each spoke denoting one of: Actor, Writer, Director, Producer, and Tehnician.
Betty Davis "claims" to have named the award after her husband Oscar Nelson. Her first husband!
Winners or the heirs are not allowed to sell their Oscars unless they sell them back to the Academy for $1.00.
Because metal was scarce in WW II, the Oscars given out during this period were made of wood.
Actors and actresses who actually "win" an award living longer than those nominated.
